Bill Abdale

A hanging
Ink and collage on paper
12 x 9 inches

The figure in the collage is the singer Dominic Mallory performing with his American hardcore band Last Lights. In 2008, at the age of 24, Mallory died from a brain aneurysm. On the evening of his death, the singer performed a common stage stunt where he would put the cord of the microphone around his neck simulating strangulation. The title of the collage comes from the tarot card The Hanged Man that depicts a man hung upside down with his legs bound. The card has often been called a symbol of martyrdom, and the expression on the man's face is of deep entrancement. It translates to passivity, waiting or transition. Abdale incorporates bandage tape into many of his works. Here it is collaged onto Mallory's face repeating the symbol of the cross.
