Bill Abdale

Enamel on bookcloth
90 x 55 inches

The image in the center of the oversized hanging bookcloth is of a broken mirror. It comes from the cover of the album Damaged by the 1970s punk band Black Flag. Abdale enlarged the iconic image and painted it by hand followed by the black vertical lines. The title of this work comes from two songs on the album called Damaged 1 and Damaged 2. The lyrics for the songs refer to the hardcore military-like discipline that the lead-singer Henry Rollins endured from his estranged ultra-conservative father. On the cover of the album it is Rollins who is breaking the mirror with his fist.
